Conyers Applauds Housing Anti-Discrimination Standards

New Department of Housing and Urban Development Rule Formalizes Disparate Impact Standard
U.S. Representative
John Conyers, Jr.

(WASHINGTON) – This afternoon, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) issued a final rule formalizing, “the national standard for determining whether a housing practice violates the Fair Housing Act as a result of discriminatory effect.” After the announcement of this rule, Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) issued the following statement:

“The issuance of this rule will bring important clarity to litigation around the Fair Housing Act.  At a time when families are trying to protect their rights in the wake of the financial crisis, this long overdue action by HUD should allow all parties to focus on remedying claims of discrimination, rather than wrangling about the scope of the law.”
